It’s that feeling you get
ten seconds before the phone rings
An uneasiness after a long conversation
as if those words were somehow the last
Waking at 5 a.m. only to hear the thunder a minute later
Turning to look out a window before a brilliant flash of lightning
A brief chill as you pass an intersection
soon to be filled with wreckage and broken lives
When a long kiss goodbye, unusually soulful,
becomes in retrospect the last kiss goodbye
Awakening to turbulence on a long red-eye flight
Uncomfortably sure the end is near
It’s knowing the future
and wielding no control over its course
Awakening to bird song and a pleasant breeze
And for a moment forgetting the dread…
